CFP: Medieval Dress and Textile Society (MEDATS) Conference

The Medieval Dress and Textiles Society conference on Saturday 4 June 2016 will be titled:

‘On the Move’

Proposals are invited for 20-minute papers on relevant topics concerning the movement of dress and/or textiles and the use of dress and textiles in travel between c. 500 and 1600.

Topics might include:
Tents and their furnishings
Bags, wrappings, pockets
Peripatetic households
Prestige gifts
Travelling clothes
Waggon covers and emballage
Royal marriages
The Silk Road and other trade routes

Please submit your title and a 200-word synopsis to the Programme Secretary, Gale R. Owen-Crocker, by 31 December 2015.

The Conference will be held at The Art Workers’ Guild, 6, Queen Square London WC1N 3AT from 11am to 5.15pm.

Details for the last Dress and Textile Discussion Group meeting at the University of Manchester for this academic year:

Dr Elizabeth Coatsworth will be speaking about Grace Christie one of the pioneers of medieval embroidery research. Her paper is entitled, 'Mrs. Christie and English Medieval Embroidery'.

The meeting will take place on Thursday 1st May at 5 pm.

Dress and Textile Discussion Group Meeting

Below are details of the next Dress and Textile Discussion Group meeting at the University of Manchester.

Our speaker is Dr John-Peter Wild who will be talking about: 'Cotton - the New Wool. A Developing Tale from Roman Egypt'. The meeting will take place on Thursday 13th February between 5-6 pm. The room is Seminar Room 1 in the Graduate Suite, Ellen Willkinson Building, University of Manchester.

To find the room you will need to enter the building via the north entrance. The Graduate Suite is on the left of the foyer. You will need to swipe your university card to gain access. If you do not have a card, the person on duty will know about the meeting and will let you in. They will also be able to guide you to the room which is on the ground floor.

Dress and Textiles Discussion Group - Upcoming Meeting

The next meeting of the Dress and Textile Discussion Group will take place on Thursday 31st January at 5 pm.

The speaker is Ruth Gilbert who will be talking to about 'Process and product: experimental archaeology, replicas and fakes'.

The room: Samuel Alexander Building S3.1, University of Manchester.

(This room is on the south side (modern) of the building. Walk up the stairs or take the lift to the third floor and the room should be on the corridor to the left.)

I am always looking for people who would be interested in talking to the group. If you think you might like to talk to the group then please e-mail me with your idea. At present the focus of the group is dress and textiles from c. 450-1450. However, I am willing to discuss ideas outside of this time-frame as they may help to contextualise dress and textiles of the medieval period.

Call for Papers 2012-13

This will be our last meeting for this academic year. I am now starting to put together the programme for next year. If you would like to speak about a research idea you have bubbling away in the back of your mind or something you are already investigating then please contact me.

It is a very informal and welcoming group with a wide range of interests. If you are unsure whether your research fits into the group's brief or if you are worried about speaking in front of people then please contact me and we can discuss any worries.

The group's focus is dress and textiles during the medieval period (c. AD 450-1600); however, I would be more than willing to discuss ideas outside of this date range. Technological advances, design development, working practices to suggest but a few areas, place the period in context.
